Tony Hathaway
In 1966 Tony Hathaway returned from two years of Peace Corps service in Ethiopia with several boxes of photos. When he showed his images to a National Geographic photographer, he had high hopes of being hired by the magazine. The photographer took one look at Tonys slides and suggested he consider insurance as a career!

Disappointed but not discouraged, Tony enrolled in a correspondence photography course, pursued work as a freelance photographer and landed a job as a photo editor for the US Department of Agriculture. Just as he began to get some freelance architectural photography assignments, the bottom fell out of the construction market and he was left to reconsider his career path.

Tony joined forces with a photographer friend to start their own business reproducing graphic and photographic images on aluminum sheets for use as plaques and signs. His business flourished and it wasnt until he retired in 1998 that he decided to get serious about his photography nature photography in particular.

In recent years Tony has pursued his passion for nature photography, traveling with Joseph Van Os Photo Safaris to several destinations including Antarctica, Svalbard/Spitsbergen, Brazils Pantanal, Australia, Iceland, Yellowstone National Park and Alaska. The wonderful photos he has shared with us below were taken on two of our Alaska tours: Denali National Park in Autumn and Brown Bears of Katmai National Park in Autumn.

Tonys fascination with photography continues to grow. He does all of his own processing, printing, matting and framing and makes greeting cards from his best shots. He has shown his photos at arts and crafts shows, libraries, retirement homes and businesses. According to Tony, It still gives me a thrill when a perfect stranger likes one of my pictures enough to buy it.
