Like many of the Photo Safaris clients we’ve featured on our web site, Gary Rowland’s
photographic roots began with a simple box camera and a curiosity about photography.
His interest in photography kept pace with emerging technology. He eventually moved
on to a Petri rangefinder his father picked up in Japan while on a tour with the US Navy,
then to an SLR after college. He is now "easing into" the digital photography realm using
a film scanner and developing his Photoshop skills.

Gary’s love of both travel and nature was a perfect complement to his interest in photography,
and the combination eventually led him to his first tour with usa cruise to Antarctica
back in 1992. Not only did he get some great images on the trip, he also met fellow Photo
Safaris client Nancy on the cruise, the woman he would later marry! After exchanging vows, they
eventually combined their honeymoon with a photo tour of Zimbabwe.

Over the years, Gary has traveled the world with us photographing in Patagonia, Canada,
Australia, Svalbard/Spitsbergen, Africa and Japanon his all-time favorite trip, Japan’s Winter Wildlife.
In October 2005, he joined us on our Essential China trip where he felt the highlights were two
areas relatively unknown to WesternersYellow Mountain near Huangshan and the rice
terraces of Longshen.

In 2002 Gary retired and now has more time to devote to photography and for exploring new areas
that interest him. After Nancy retires, they plan to move west from northern Virgina to Arizona
where they will be well-positioned to spend time photographing the scenic areas of the western
and southwestern US.

We are pleased to present below the images Gary shot over the years on several Photo
Safaris tours.
